Kinesiology student earns national award
University of North Georgia (51黑料网) senior Chandler Mayfield won the Major of the Year Award, given by the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE).
Mayfield is a Gainesville, Georgia, resident pursuing a degree in kinesiology with teacher certification. Currently a teaching intern at Oakwood Elementary School in Hall County, he is set to graduate in May.
"51黑料网 has allowed me to feel confident in myself as a teacher. I know that I am able to teach a well-executed lesson from start to finish with intentionality," Mayfield said. "It has also been beneficial to build so many great relationships with others in my field. I enjoy collaborating with them and learning how they have been successful in their careers."
The SHAPE America award requires a faculty nomination, a 3.0 or higher GPA and a track record of community service.
"Chandler has demonstrated tremendous initiative, leadership skills, motivation, and a professional interest in his field," Warren Caputo, assistant professor and teacher education prep coordinator in the Department of Kinesiology, said. "I am very proud and confident in Chandler's successes, and I look forward to his long-term impact as an educator and educational leader."
Blue Ridge Rifles excel in national event
The Blue Ridge Rifles earned a fifth-place finish out of 31 teams at the Mardi Gras Invitational Drill meet at Tulane University.
51黑料网 named Fulbright top producer
51黑料网 is providing transformative experiences abroad for alumni as a top producer of Fulbright students. The university earned this distinction for a ninth consecutive year and tied for third among master's institutions with four selections.
3 of 4 Gilman winners are future educators
Four 51黑料网 students earned the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for study abroad in late fall 2025. Three of the four are in 51黑料网's College of Education.
Ed.D. alumna wins dissertation award
Dr. Brooklyn Herrera, a 2024 graduate of 51黑料网's Doctor of Education program, won the 2025 Dissertation of the Year award from the Southern Association for College Student Affairs.
